Review of Minutes

Officer Reports:

President

Nancy Wedell is replacing Susan the new national HIMSS program manager for the chapters.  She would like to know what resources we would need from her.  Her direct number is 312-915-9266.

We need additional people to participate if at all possible.

Treasurer

Our current account balance is $17,705.  From the conference in July our total income was $8,833, expenses were: $5,424 with a net of $3,400.  We are still working out details regarding the keynote speaker.  All other expenses have been submitted.

Chapter dues received since the beginning of FY2003, $4,900.  The most recent dues we received were from September.

The chapter receives $20. for every national member from Michigan or that denotes Michigan as their local chapter.  All renewals are through national and they send us a check.  We also charge $30 for local members only, and believe we see $10. from those memberships.

ACTION ITEM:  Ken will submit to all officers and board a written treasurer’s report.

Secretary

Last minutes are from August 26 and will be resent to the group.

General Discussion

Ron has gotten Jan involved to help us.  Jan has expressed that he could perhaps bring some web expertise to the group because he knows people.  For his direct involvement, he can pick the area(s) he is most interested in.

In our discussion of what involvement we can use, we also talked about the need for future involvement after the current officer terms expire.

We have officers and a board with additional committees including:  communications, programs and membership committees, but we also need a finance committee.  We also have a research liaison with Jennifer Horowitz helping us from national in Ann Arbor.

Mike McGill is the director of the IT program at Walsh College.  Perhaps they would be good candidates for web development for us.  They are looking for small projects for their students.  Helen woujld like to see us get 3-4 people on each committee to help spread the work.  We have done 4 major events in our first year, and have two events so far this year, with two more events to be held.  It helps to have our formal plan of action for each committee as well.

Committee Chair/Regional Advisory Council Reports:

Programs

Ron will take the lead on the joint meeting with HISA for December.  Like us, HISA is obligated to do several programs a year.  A combined program will help both organizations.  The proposed presentation is a holiday mixer with one keynote speaker to present.  They have considered the new Surgeon General of Michigan.  This would be an evening program in the local SE Michigan area.  They propose that we do one program like this every year to help offset the expenses and coordination of this type of event.  The group unanimously agreed that this would be a good approach.

As soon as they determine a program topic, they should let the groups know so we can suggest presenters.

ACTION ITEM:  Ron will work with HISA to arrange the December program.

Helen had concerns that this does not meet the needs of all of our Michigan constituency, in that it will be in SE Michigan in the evening.  She wondered if a program similar to this, a small, informal networking opportunity, would be well-attended up north.  Elaine thought that generally this type of event would not be too successful up north and that timing would be tight.

Ron wondered if we want to set up our program rotation for planning, in that we will always have an annual golf outing during the summer, evening networking program in December for a winter mixer, and so on.  St. John Conference Center is our preferred location for other programs.  We are identified with St. Johns Conference Center as “our location” plus it is less costly than the MSU Management Center.

Nancy Schlichting of Henry Ford Health System offered to Helen an idea for a future program regarding the EHR standard.  The goal would be to involve Gale Warden, former CEO of Henry Ford and others.  Warden is working for Governor Granholm to develop a viable scheme for uncompensated care in the state of Michigan.  They know Tommy Thompson and Scully from the CMS and might be able to bring them in.  National would be interested in helping us out because this has national recognition.  Lansing or SE Michigan would both be good venues for the conference.  The group agreed that SE Michigan would be the best venue.

We would like to hold this in late spring.  We would want to think carefully about who we want to pull into something like this.  We want the commitment from CMS that they will send someone.  It might also be good to involve the major vendors and talk about their commitment to the EHR standard.

Elaine would like to have something up north related to networking, an event that is smaller than a program but still offers opportunity for members to get together.  Having a core group in a particular area can help further these types of meetings.  Elaine thinks it may not qualify as a valid program, but perhaps we set a goal that each region presents a program each year, then we set other goals for our chapter.  This is a way to help the regional area groups get more involved and maintain their own involvement.

Regional Advisory Council

Our strategic planning follow up will be on Friday, October 24 from 12 – 4 pm at Reliance Software Systems.  The chapter will buy lunch.

ACTION ITEM:  Alicia will resend out the strategic planning meeting notes to everyone.  She and Helen will follow up with plans for the meeting.

Our next meeting will be in November, and we should get into our bi-weekly meeting mode for planning.  We will also talk to HISA about their desire to join us in our Tuesday calls.

GLIMA is a technology group out of Automation Alley.  Genesys is holding a GLIMA meeting on November 4 covering wireless technology.  There is also a GLIMA web site that will advertise the web site.  Dave Holland is the East Region President of GLIMA.

Helen got an email from Spectrum in Grand Rapids from a person that would like to join.  She would like to get them on the next call.  Also, if Elaine knows anyone from up north that would like to be involved in our strategic planning meeting, she is encouraged to bring them.

Future Agenda Items

Determine methods to archive all HIMSS data permanently in anticipation of handing off to future HIMSS officers.

MI-HIMSS Supermarket.  This would be a mini-exposition of Michigan vendors.  We would group by technology, which is where the Supermarket concept comes from—for example, CPOE vendors are in one area, EMR vendors in another, Security is in another, etc.  We would bring in vendors and allow them to present separately, perhaps even a technology face-off, as well as provide the expo.  We expressed some concern regarding HIMSS National feelings about this type of event.

HIMSS Speaker Assistance Program
