Northern Michigan Conference

Elaine approached Richard Howe to speak at the conference, but he is unavailable.  She is still working to contact Marquette regarding their involvement.  Also, she has spoken to Shanty Creek and obtained information regarding their offerings for housing the conference and golf.

Richard Howe is a past president of HIMSS.  Helen suggested we can investigate speakers through HIMSS.

Elaine feels Marquette will be involved and present information regarding their web portal.  Shanty Creek is fairly booked for weekends other than June 12th and June 19th.  If we move it out to July, we can try other dates, but Shanty Creek needs a month’s notice.  Shanty Creek is in Bellaire Michigan, about 1 hour southeast of Petosky.

Lunch $10 dinner local rest or $25 there rooms 105 condo 190 4 golf courses

45, 65, 110, 110 rate per golf course per person.  They can do box lunch or lunch buffet on golf day.  Discounted conf rates normal cut off for reserve is 30 days adavcance, chris talked them into 15 days before arrival.  Conference rooms are free of charge.

we feel we can get 100 participants with only 50 participating in golf.  We anticipate a minimum of 6 teams and a maximum of 10.

Helen expressed concerns regarding the time frame.  Ron acknowledged that this is 5-6 weeks away.  Rick also expressed concern.  Elaine suggested perhaps the following weekend, June 19th. There was concern about running into general vacation time in July as well as the 4th of July.

HFMA and CLIMA are both around that time.  SCAR group is also the week of the 12th.  HIMSS Summer Conference in Chicago is the week of June 6.

We estimate need keynote speaker and two other speakers, or a panel.  We expect that vendors would be open to this opportunity.  Elaine can check with Richard Howe for the June 19th event.  Helen suggested that Microsoft Eclipsys, Cerner and others would be interested.  We could investigate CPOE solutions for small and large hospitals.

Rick asked Elaine what her interests would be from a CIO’s perspective.  She mentioned that there is so much in healthcare right now, that anyone who is using emerging technology is of interest.  Helen mentioned an interest in process change regarding new technologies.  How are hospitals readdressing process redesign?  Trinity is one, other hospitals must be doing this as well.

The group suggested to narrow the perspective to practical use of emerging technologies and how vendors and hospitals have used them successfully.  This includes wireless, the upcoming 802.11G standard and other things.  This would be even better if we could take this directly to the vendors and have them coordinate their portion of the event.  Rick has a friend who is part of a start up and can investigate his technologies.  The program should be a combination of vendor/hospital, not just from a vendor perspective.

We could talk to Siemens, Eclipsys and Cerner, and have them coordinate a success story.  Elaine is concerned that this may not be the best way to go.  Ron acknowledged that innovation mostly comes out of the smaller companies.  This should be regional focus of Michigan hospitals.

Marquette developed their own lab outreach product that has been regionalized with their 5 hospitals.  It is a web portal design.

Owosso has implemented Xylock, Providence is implementing Xylock.  This would bring in one vendor with two Michigan hospitals.

Should we forgo a keynote speaker?  Helen thinks not.

Ron exchanged email with the president of Bridge Medical.  They offered to participate.  Northern Michigan is a Bridge Medical customer, they were the first Bridge Medical site.  Elaine suggested involving someone who is using robotics.  Grand Blanc is using McKesson robot to fill carts.

Helen wondered if anyone is doing telehealth or telemedicine?  Ron mentioned that Munson may be doing something with Spectrum Health regarding telehealth.

Ron offered that each of us speak to 2-3 vendors and talk to them about their technology and that we reconvene next week and discuss what we have found.

Elaine will talk to Xylock and will talk to Chris about telerad.  The criteria should be an implementation in progress or completed at a Michigan hospital.

Helen will speak to the larger companies.  Rick will talk to his contacts as will Alicia.

Keeping the focus on emerging technologies will narrow out consulting groups who are more focused on process changing.

We decided to move the event to the week of June 19th.  We will discuss this again next Tuesday.

Elaine will hold Shanty Creek for the weekend of June 19th.

The event will be held on Thursday, golf will be held on Friday.

Determine methods to archive all HIMSS data permanently in anticipation of handing off to future HIMSS officers.

MI-HIMSS Supermarket.  This would be a mini-exposition of Michigan vendors.  We would group by technology, which is where the Supermarket concept comes from—for example, CPOE vendors are in one area, EMR vendors in another, Security is in another, etc.  We would bring in vendors and allow them to present separately, perhaps even a technology face-off, as well as provide the expo.  We expressed some concern regarding HIMSS National feelings about this type of event.
